The solution of 10.8 g of tert-butyl 3-(4-bromo-3-nitrobenzyloxy)-4-{4-[3-(2-methoxybenzyloxy)propoxy]phenyl}piperidine-1-carboxylate in 250 ml of benzene is admixed with stirring at 10° C. with the solution of 4.08 g of nickel chloride hexahydrate in 150 ml of benzene. At approx. 5° C., the mixture is admixed with 2.0 g of sodium borohydride in small portions over 1 hour. The reaction mixture is stirred for a further 1 hour, poured onto water (500 ml) and extracted with tert-butyl methyl ether (2×500 ml). The organic phases are washed successively with water (500 ml) and brine (500 ml), dried over sodium sulphate, filtered and concentrated by evaporation. The title compound is obtained as a yellowish oil from the residue by means of flash chromatography (SiO2 60F). Rt=6.03.
