1-(4-Benzyloxyphenyl)-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-5-methyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid piperidin-1-ylamide, from Ex. 1, Step 4 (2.78 g, 5.2 mmol) was dissolved in 80 ml CH2Cl2 and cooled to 0° C. Boron tribromide solution (1 M in CH2Cl2, 10.4 ml, 10.4 mmol) was added dropwise and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. Water (200 ml) was added and the solution extracted with EtOAc (3×200 ml). The combined organic phases were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated. Flash chromatography (silica, hexane:EtOAc 1:3, EtOAc) afforded 1.34 g (58%) of the title compound as a white solid.
