To a solution of (2-ethoxy-4′-fluoro-biphenyl-4-yl)-methanol (0.43 g, 1.75 mmol, 1.0 equiv) in dichloromethane (20 mL) was added activated MnO2 (3.04 g, 34.92 mmol, 20.0 equiv) and the reaction mixture stirred vigorously for 3 h at ambient temperature. The reaction mixture was filtered over a pad of Celite, rinsed generously with dichloromethane and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The crude material was purified with silica column chromatography eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (4:1) to yield 0.33 g (77%) of the title compound as white crystals. MS (EI): 244.1 [M]+.
