A mixture of 2-[(5-dimethylaminomethyl-3-thienyl)methylthio]ethylamine (2.11 g, 8.68 mmoles) [prepared according to the procedure described in published European Patent Application No. 27,744] and 1-amino-2-methoxycyclobutene-3,4-dione (1.10 g, 8.68 mmoles) in methanol was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 hours and filtered. The crude product was recrystallized from 2-methoxyethanol to yield 1.30 g of the title compound as a colorless solid, m.p. 234°-236°.
