Reaction Steps

140 mg of 4-dimethlaminopyridine and then 1.76 g of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide were added at 0° C. to a mixture of 3.36 g (S)α-cyano-3-phenoxy-benzyl (1R,cis,Z) 2,2-dimethyl-3-[3-oxo-3-hydroxy-1-propenyl]-cyclopropane-carboxylate, 1.7 g of chloral cyanohydrin and 16 ml of methylene chloride and the mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 21/2 hours and was then evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was chromatographed over silica gel and eluted with an 85-15 cyclohexane-ethyl acetate mixture to obtain 1.65 g of (S)α-cyano-3-phenoxy-benzyl (1R,cis,Z) 2,2-dimethyl-3-[3-oxo-3-(2,2-dichloro-1-cyanovinyloxy)-1-propenyl]-cyclopropane-carboxylate with a specific rotation of [α]D20 =+40° (c=0.3% in chloroform).
