To a solution of 2-phenylthiomethyl-4-(3-methylbutyl)-5-methyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1,1-dioxide (8.15 g, 24.66 mmol) in 200 ml of methylene chloride was added in one portion under nitrogen sulfuryl chloride (2.36 ml, 29.6 mmol) and the mixture was stirred for 3.5 hours at room temperature. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was triturated in hexane to afford 4.64 g (70%) of 2-chloromethyl-4-(3-methylbutyl)-5-methyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1,1-dioxide (Formula II: R1 =H; R2 =(CH2)2CH(CH3)2 ; R3 =CH3 ; X'=Cl) as a solid, m.p. 59°-60° C.
