5.0 g of Styrene/maleamic acid and 0.5 g of anhydrous sodium acetate were added to 50 mL of acetic anhydride in a round bottom flask equipped with an inert gas inlet tube, magnetic stirrer and a heating bath. The resulting solution was heated and maintained at 80°-85° C. under nitrogen for 3 hr. The cooled solution was poured in a slow stream into a well stirred beaker of 400 ml cold (5°-10° C.) water. The resulting solid was collected by suction filtration, washed with four portions of acidic (1 mL acetic acid per 200 mL of water) ice water and vacuum dried. Nearly quantitative yields of product were obtained.
