4-(3-Bromopropyloxy)-γ-oxo-β-methylbenzenebutanoic acid (30 g) in toluene (300 ml) was refluxed with p-toluenesulfonic acid (500 mg) under a Dean-Stark water separator for 18 hours. The mixture was filtered through basic alumina (20 g). The alumina was further washed with ethyl acetate and the combined eluants were reduced to dryness to provide the title compound as an oil.
