PROCEDURE

2.4 ml of neopentylamine are added dropwise at room temperature to a suspension of 2.5 g of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-cyclobutanedicarboxylic acid anhydride in 6 ml of acetic acid. The mixture is stirred at 120° for 20 hours. After concentration by evaporation, the residue is chromatographed over silica gel with a 2:1 ether/hexane mixture. A fraction is obtained that is identical with the title compound of Example 4b.
