Potassium hydroxide (10.5 g) was dissolved in a mixture of ethanol (80 ml) and water (15 ml). The compound (17) (12.43 g) was added thereto and the mixture was heated under reflux for 50 minutes in an oil bath. The reaction solution was cooled to room temperature, and then poured into water (400 ml). The solution was made acidic (pH 3) with conc. HC1. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried to obtain 1-carboxy-7-isopropylazulene (18), at a yield of 2.1 g (92.3%).
