Procedure

8-Fluoro-1,2,3,9-tetrahydro-3-[(5-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyl]-4H-carbazol-4-one (330 mg) was dissolved in dry ethanol (20 ml). Maleic acid (129 mg) in ethanol (10 ml) was added, and the solution was evaporated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with ether and the resultant solid was crystallised from ethanol:ether to give the title compound (351 mg), m.p. 174°-177°.
