Procedure
A solution of 2-(3,5-difluoro-phenoxy)-ethanol (2.5 g, 14.3 mmol) in pyridine (10 ml) was cooled with an ice bath and treated dropwise with methanesulfonyl chloride (1.7 g, 14.7 mmol). The ice bath was removed and the mixture was stirred for 16 hours at room temperature. The pyridine was evaporated in vacuo and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with water, with 2N hydrochloric acid then three times with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was crystallised in diisopropyl ether to give methanesulfonic acid 2-(3,5-difluoro-phenoxy)-ethyl ester (1.8 g, 51%).
