Reaction Steps
A suspension of 2,5-diphenylfuran-3-carbonitrile (0.87 g, 3.56 mmol) in ethylene glycol and 3M NaOH (10 ml) was heated at reflux for 3 days. Water was added to the reaction mixture and extracted into CH2Cl2. The organic layer was dried with MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to provide 2,5-diphenylfuran-3-carboxylic acid (intermediate XXVIf, 900 mg) as white solid.
