Reaction Steps
To an ice-cooled solution of 5-benzoylamino-napthalene-1-sulfonic acid (1.5 g, 3.51 mmol) in dichloromethane (5 ml), was added thionyl chloride (0.359 ml, 4.92 mmol). The resultant solution was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was quenched by pouring into ice water and extracting with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to provide the crude intermediate 44 as a yellow oil that was used without further purification.
