Procedure
To a solution of (Z)-1-phenylcyclohept-4-enecarbaldehyde (22 mg, step C) in methanol (1 mL) was added sodium borohydride (8 mg), and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. Methanol was removed in vacuo, water and ethyl acetate were added. The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate, and the combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound as an oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.91 (2H, m), 2.20 (6H, m), 3.55 (2H, s), 5.68 (2H, m), 7.35 (5H, m). 13C NMR (CDCl3, 100 MHz) δ 24.0, 32.9, 47.3, 71.7, 126.3, 127.4, 128.6, 131.2, 144.3.
