Procedure

A solution of 5.5 g of boron tribromide in 50 ml of absolute dichloromethane is treated dropwise at 0° C. with a solution of 6.5 g of 5-(4-isopropyloxyphenyl)-2-(4-pentylphenyl)pyrimidine in 50 ml of absolute dichloromethane. The mixture is stirred for 24 hours and then poured on to ice-water. The organic phase is separated and the aqueous phase is back-extracted three times with 50 ml of dichloromethane each time. The combined organic phases are washed with 50 ml of 2N sodium carbonate solution and several times with water, dried over magnesium sulphate and concentrated. Chromatography of the residue on silica gel with dichloromethane/methanol (vol. 99:1 ) and recrystallization from hexane give 5.2 g of 4-(2-[4-pentylphenyl]-5-pyrimidinyl)phenol with m.p. 152°-153° C.
