Ozone was passed through a -78° C. CH2Cl2 (650 mL) solution of compound 4a (55 g, 84 mmol) until a blue color was maintained. Excess ozone was purged with N2. Dimethyl sulfide (60 mL) was added. The solution was allowed to warm to room temperature and to stand for 48 h. The solution was concentrated to afford the title compound which was not further purified but used directly in step B.
