Procedure
A 25.2 g (0.1 mcl) sample of 5-methyl-2-thienylsulfonyl chloride was added slowly to a solution of 100 cc concentrated sulfuric acid and 100 cc concentrated nitric acid. The resulting mixture was allowed to stir overnight at about 25° C. The reaction mixture was then added to ice water and filtered to give the 5-methyl-4-nitro-2-thienylsulfenyl chloride product.
