Procedure
1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-iminoimidazolidine-2,4-dione (15.0 g -- 0.074 mol) was slurried in 40 ml chloroform. Chloral (21.8 g -- 0.148 mol) was added directly to the slurry. Exothermicity raised the temperature 20° C.The reaction mixture was momentarily homogeneous before an abundance of product precipitated. An additional 100 ml of chloroform was added at thispoint. After 0.5 hour the mixture was filtered. The filter cake was washed with chloroform and dried. The product melted at 130°-133° C.
