14.3 Parts of N-cyclopentyl-2,5-dimethylfuran-3-hydroxamic acid is dissolved in 100 parts of dichloromethane; to this solution there is added a solution of 7.7 parts of sodium hydroxide in 50 parts of water. 16.1 parts of dimethyl sulfate is then dripped into this mixture. After stirring the mixture for 1 hour, the dichloromethane phase is separated, washed with water until neutral, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated. There is obtained 12.1 parts of O-methyl-N-cyclopentyl-2,5-dimethylfuran-3-hydroxamic acid having a boiling point at 0.1 mm Hg of from 103° to 105° C and the refractive index ND25 : 1.5060. ##SPC10##
