Procedure

A mixture of 18.15 g of 3-(m-benzoyl-phenyl)-propionic acid and 25 ml of thionyl chloride was refluxed for 11/2 hours and excess thionyl chloride was removed under reduced pressure to obtain 3-(m-benzoyl-phenyl)-propionyl chloride which was used as is for the next step.
