Procedure
A mixture of 8 g of 4-(3'-p-chlorobenzoyl-2'-methylphenyl)-butyric acid (Example V) and 80 ml of thionyl chloride was refluxed for 45 minutes and after removal of excess thionyl chloride under reduced pressure, 60 ml of benzene were added thereto. The traces of thionyl chloride were removed by entrainment with benzene. This operation was repeated 3 times. The residue was taken up in tetra-hydrofuran to obtain a solution of 4-(3'-p-chlorobenzoyl-2'-methyl-phenyl)-butyric acid chloride which was used as is for the next step.
