Trifluoroacetic acid (100 ml) was added to a mixture of the product of Stage (a) (12.5 g) and anisole (5 ml) at 0°. The mixture was treated substantially as described in Example 1 (b) to give the title compound (4 g), λmax (pH 6 buffer) 246 nm (E1 cm1% 264), λinf 295 nm (E1 cm1% 118), [α]D20 +27.3° (c 1.0, DMSO).
