(3S-trans)-3-[(t-Butoxycarbonyl)amino]-4-methyl-2-oxo-1-azetidinesulfonic acid tetra-n-butylammonium salt (6.3 g) is dissolved in 30 ml of 97% formic acid and stirred for 5 hours during which time a precipitate forms. The slurry is diluted with 30 ml of methylene chloride and filtered. The solids are further washed with methylene chloride and dried to yield 1.53 g of analytically pure product [α]D21 =-41.0[c=1, water].
