A stirred solution of [2,3-dichloro-4-(6-ethyl-3-oxo-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)phenoxy]acetic acid (3.43 g, 0.01 mole) in ethanol (50 ml) containing sulfuric acid (4 drops) was heated at reflux for 4 hours. The ethanol was evaporated at reduced pressure, the residue dissolved in ether, washed with dilute sodium hydroxide, water, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo to give 3.31 g of ethyl [2,3-dichloro-4-(6-ethyl-3-oxo-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)-phenoxy]acetate which melted at 110°-112° C.
