Reaction Steps

To a stirred solution of sodium methoxide (2.3 g, 0.043 mole) in ethanol (50 ml) and ethyl acetoacetate (5.56 g, 0.043 mole) was added [2,3-dichloro-4-(2-methylene-2-cyclopentyl-1-oxoethyl)phenoxy]acetic acid (6.5 g, 0.019 mole). The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 2 hours, then the solvent was distilled at reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in water, acidified, extracted into ether, washed with water, extracted into sodium bicarbonate, acidified, extracted into ether, washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure to give 2.6 g of [2,3-dichloro-4-(6-cyclopentyl-3-oxo-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)phenoxy]acetic acid which melted at 206°-207° C. after recrystallization from 300 ml of toluene.
