Procedure
A mixture of methyl 2,3-dihydro-5-methoxy-4-oxo-10-propyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-4H-naphtho[2,3-b]pyran-2-carboxylate (3.4 g) and N-bromosuccinimide (1.78 g) was heated at reflux in carbon tetrachloride (150 ml) for 6 hours. The solution was cooled, washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated. The residue was crystallised from petroleum ether (60°-80°) giving the title compound as a fawn solid, mp 92°-3°.
