Procedure

A solution of 117 g (0.5 mol) of 4-[2-(3-carboxypropyl)phenyl]-2-butanone, 9, in 200 ml of absolute methanol containing 2 equivalents (1.0 mol) of boron trifluoride methanol complex was refluxed for 16 hours. It was concentrated and the residue washed with H2O, then aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. After drying, it was distilled to give 111 g of the keto ester 10, bp 132°-136° C./0.2 mm.
