Reaction Steps
To a solution of benzoic acid (1.22 g) and triethylamine (1.4 ml) in chloroform (15 ml) is added 1-(p-chlorobenzenesulfonyloxy)-6-chloro-1,2,3-benzotriazole (3.44 g) and the mixture is allowed to stand for 1.5 hours. To the mixture are added methanol (1.6 ml) and triethylamine (1.4 ml), whereby exothermic reaction occurrs. After reacting them for 1 hour and 20 minutes, chloroform is distilled off and to the resulting residue are added water and ether. The ether layer is washed with water, an aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and water in order and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After drying, the solvent is distilled off to give methyl benzoate (1.26 g).
