2.0 g (7.7 mmol) of 6-amino-1-benzyl-3-propyluracil are heated to 80° C. in 15 ml of water and mixed with a solution of 0.55 g of sodium nitrite in 3 ml of water. After the addition of 1 ml of glacial acetic acid a red solid is precipitated. The pH is adjusted to 4 and the suspension is stirred for a further 30 minutes at 80° C. After cooling, the crystals are filtered under suction and washed with water. 1.9 g of the title compound are obtained in the form of reddish-violet crystals (86% of theory), m.p. 208°-212° C./decomposition.
