Procedure
20 ml of acetic anhydride was added to 12.2 g of (4RS,5SR)-4,5-bis(acetoxymethyl)-1,3-dioxolane obtained in Example 20. The mixture was mixed to dissolution at room temperature. To this were added 0.7 g of anhydrous zinc chloride and 2 ml of glacial acetic acid. The mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and extracted with 300 ml of ethyl acetate. The extract was neutralized with saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate. After washing with water and drying over anhydrous sodium sulfate, the product was filtered and the solvent was evaporated to obtain 19.0 g (yield: 92.0%) of the title compound.
