Advantageously, approximately n equivalents of the carboxylic anhydride, or a slight excess, are used. Naturally, it is also possible, with reduced yield, to use the carboxylic anhydride in less than equivalent amounts. Good results are obtained when 0.95 n to 1.05 n equivalents of the carboxylic anhydride are used. For example, it is possible to react 1 mole of AlCl3 (n=3) with 3 moles of acetic acid anhydride to give acetyl chloride and aluminum acetate.
