Reaction Steps

400 μl of methyl 2-mercaptoacetate was added to a slurry of 1 g of (78) and 1.1 g of K2CO3 in 10 ml of MeOH. The reaction was stirred overnight, and then 20 ml of water was added. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc, and the organic layer washed with water, dried and evaporated to give (79) as a yellow oil. Yield 880 mg. 1H-NMR (ppm): 8.1(s, 1H); 7.8(d, 1H); 7.5(d, 1H); 7.3(m, 2H); 5.6(s, 2H); 3.9(s, 3H); 3.5(m, 4H); 3.35(s, 3H).
