2-amino-4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazine (9.7 g, 58.8 mM) was dispersed in water (50 mL), sodium carbonate solution (2N, 60 mL) and dioxane 15 mL) at 0° C. 6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline hydrochloride (13.9 g, 58.8 mM) was added and the mixture was stirred vigorously for 1 hr. The product was filtered, rinsed with water, dried and recrystallized from methanol; 14.3 g (75%), mp=196°-197° C.
