8.29 g (16.5 mmol) of the above 2-(3-chloro-4-pivaloylaminophenyl)-6,8-difluoro-7-methyl-5-pivaloylamino-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one was dissolved in 60 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid and the solution was stirred at 50° C. for 10 minutes. The reaction solution was poured into ice water and the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration. The crystals were triturated with a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and collected by filtration again. The crystals were recrystallized twice from ethyl acetate/n-hexane to give 2.42 g of Compound 103 (yield: 44%).
