Reaction Steps

A mixture of 1-cyclopentyl-3-ethyl-6-thioxopyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-one (5.2 g, 19.6 mmol), DMF (50 ml) and K2CO3 (2.8 g, 20 mmol) was stirred at ambient temperature for 25 minutes. The mixture was then treated with dimethylsulfate (3.8 ml, 40 mmol) and was stirred for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into water and the resulting white precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with water. The product was recrystallized from cyclohexane/ether and dried in high vacuum at 70°-75° C. to afford 4.6 g (85%) of 1-cyclopentyl-3-ethyl-6-methylthiopyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-one as cream colored needles, m.p. 200°-202° C.
