Procedure
7-Benzyloxy-4-chloro-6-methoxyquinazoline hydrochloride (1.6 g, 4.7 mmol), (prepared as described for the starting material in Example 1), was then added and the reaction mixture heated at 110° C. for 2 hours. The mixture was allowed to cool, water was added and the mixture extracted with ethyl acetate (3×100 ml). The combined extracts were then washed with 2M sodium hydroxide solution, water and brine. Removal of the solvent under reduced pressure gave 7-benzyloxy-6-methoxy-4-phenoxyquinazoline (1.6 g, 95%) as a yellowish solid.
