A mixture of 1.6 g of 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-4-hydroxycarbonyl-2-methyl-3-[4-(2-pyridyl)phenyl]-2H-pyrazol-5-one and 16 ml of thionyl chloride was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction solution was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was crystallized in a liquid mixture of n-hexane-toluene to give 1.65 g of the desired compound as a pale yellow solid.
