200 ml of a 10% ethanolic potassium hydroxide solution are added to a solution of 41 g (0.11 mmol) of ethyl 3-[(ethoxycarbonyl)amino]-6-(phenylmethoxy)benzofuran-2-carboxylate in 400 ml of ethanol. The mixture is heated at reflux for 30 minutes and the solvent is then evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue is taken up in water and the solution is acidified with hydrochloric acid to pH 2. 41 g of product are obtained by filtration of the precipitate formed.
