1-(1-Benzylpiperidin-4-yl)-4(4-fluorophenyl)-5-(4-pyridyl)imidazole (100 mg; prepared in Example 40) was dissolved in 10% formic acid/methanol under argon and palladium black (100 mg) mixed in 10% formic acid/methanol was added. The reaction was stirred under argon at room temperature for sixteen hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue mixed in H2O/ethyl acetate and the pH taken to 10. The layers were separated and the aqueous phase extracted with ethyl acetate.
