124 μl of pyridine were added at room temperature to a suspension of 100 mg of 3-acetyl-6-hydroxypyridine and 232 mg of 5-[4-(2-aminooxyethoxy)benzyl]thiazolidine-2,4-dione hydrochloride [prepared as described in step (e) above] in 10 ml of ethanol, and the resulting mixture was stirred and heated under reflux for 1 hour. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the precipitate was collected by filtration to give 183 mg of the title compound as a crystalline powder, melting at 240-242° C.
