Reaction Steps

A 50 mL solution of (1) in MeOH was cooled to 0° C. and NaBH4 (2 molar excess) was added. Stirring continued for 20 minutes at a temperature of about 0° to 20° C. The reaction mixture was diluted with Et2O, filtered through a thin layer of SiO2 and evaporated to provide a 1.59 g (≈100%) yield of (2).
