Procedure

A mixture of 3.62 g of the product of Example 16 and 16 ml of 50% aqueous formic acid was held at 60° C. for 20 minutes was then cooled at 20° C. 16 ml of water were added and the mixture was stirred and vacuum filtered. The precipitate was rinsed and dried to obtain 1.23 g of triphenylcarbinol. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue was taken up in ethanol which solution was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was taken up in water and the mixture was stirred and then cooled to induce crystallization. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the gummy crystals were rinsed with water and dried to obtain 1.68 g of raw product.
