A mixture of 4.8 g of 2,5-dimethoxy-3,4,6-trimethyl-1-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzene [prepared as described in step (b) above], 1.0 g of 10% w/w palladium-on-charcoal and 100 ml of ethanol was stirred under a hydrogen atmosphere at room temperature for 3 hours. At the end of this time, the catalyst was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, to give 3.9 g of the title compound. p Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrum (CDCl3) δ ppm:
