Procedure

0.47 g of methyl trans-3-(1,4-dimethoxy-2-naphthyl)acrylate [prepared as described in step (b) above] was dissolved in 20 ml of methanol and hydrogenated under an atmosphere of hydrogen and in the presence of 0.20 g of 10% w/w palladium-on-charcoal, to give 0.41 g of the title compound as a colorless oil.
