Reaction Steps
3,4-Dimethoxychalcone (m,p,--(CH3O)2C6H3 --CH=CH--CO--C6H5) (26.8 g; 0.1 mole) and ethyl acetoacetate (13 g; 0.1 mole) are dissolved in ethanol (300 ml). Activated baryta (1 g) is added, and the mixture stirred at 20° C. for 20 hours. The oxovalerate precipitate is filtered off, washed with ethanol and dried. Compound no. 501 (27 g; yield:68%) is obtained, m.p. 135° C.
