Reaction Steps
Sodium hydride (60% liquid paraffin dispersion, 136 mg, 3.39 mmol) was added to a solution of 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-2,2,4,6,7-pentamethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-5-ol (1.0 g, 3.08 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (30 mL) at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred for 10 minutes at the same temperature. To the reaction mixture was added 2-(chloromethyl)quinoline hydrochloride (730 mg. 3.39 mmol) and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at 80° C. The reaction mixture was poured into water (40 mL), and extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were combined, washed with eater, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. To the residue was added 4 N HCl-ethanol, and the solvent was removed through distillation. The residue was crystallized from ethanol-hexane to obtain the title compound (1.1 g, yield 71%).
