Procedure

A solution of benzyl 8-[2-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]-4-(4-cyanophenoxy)butyl]-3,8-diazabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-3-carboxylate (1 g, 1.8 mmol; from step (i) above) in 95% ethanol (200 mL) was hydrogenated over 5% Pd/C at 1 atm. for 1.5 h. The mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite® and the filtrate was evaporated to give 0.7 g (97%) of the title compound.
