4′-isobutylacetophenone (215 g) was added to 49% sulfuric acid (1 Liter) was and potassium bromate (268 g) was added under ice-cooling over 1.5 h. The mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred further for 1 h, which was followed by extraction with toluene. The organic layer was washed with water and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, after which the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The remaining oily substance was distilled under highly reduced pressure to give 3′-bromo-4′-isobutylacetophenone (182 g), boiling point: 130–140° C./0.15 mmHg
