Phthalimidoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal (100 g, 0.38 mol) and 1 N hydrochloric acid (600 ml) was mixture was stirred at reflux temperature for 5 min. or until a homogeneous solution is obtained. The reaction mixture was cooled and the precipitate was filtered off and dried in vacuo at 50° C. for 16 hours, which afforded 63.3 g (88%) of phthalimido-acetaldehyde as a solid.
